Migaloo is a one-bedroom apartment inside the Ramada Resort at Urangan, with direct access to the resort pool — a few steps from the bed to the water, and the pool is heated through winter. A king bedroom, a light-filled living area that opens to the terrace, a full kitchen, and a pull-out sofa, so four people sleep comfortably without anybody feeling squeezed.

Migaloo and Bahloo sit either side of the same dividing wall at the Ramada. They are effectively the same stay: same resort, same pool, same short walk to the marina. The only difference is the layout — Migaloo is the one-bedroom with a full kitchen that sleeps four, and Bahloo next door is the king studio for one or two.

The apartment is clean, bright and properly set up — a fully equipped kitchen, laundry, two TVs, free Wi-Fi, and resort facilities on your doorstep. The pool is heated through winter and left unheated in summer, which is exactly the right way around in Hervey Bay. Free parking is in the basement; there are no dedicated spaces, so take any that is free.

Urangan Marina is a four minute walk, so whale watching boats and the Manta Ray vehicle ferry across to K'gari (Fraser Island) are close enough to stroll to before breakfast. The Boat Club, with its live shows, cinemas and generous meals, is walking distance too, along with Hervey Bay's cafés, waterfront restaurants, the family splash park, the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens and the long flat coastal walks the town is known for.

Breakfast is available every morning at Smokey Joe's Cafe, the in-house restaurant, and Miss Smokey's Bar & Tapas overlooks the resort pool for an afternoon cocktail — both a few steps from your door. Breakfast is not included in your stay and is paid for separately at the restaurant. It is a hot buffet (bacon, sausages, hash browns, baked beans, eggs your way, plus tea, coffee and juices) at $28 adults and $14 children, or continental (cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, breads and pastries, spreads, tea, coffee and juices) at $18 adults and $8 children. Served 6:30–9:00am Monday to Friday and 6:30–10:00am on weekends.

It suits couples, solo travellers and small families equally well — a peaceful, convenient base for a weekend, a whale watching trip, or a longer stay.

Inside Ramada Resort at Urangan, Hervey Bay. Whale watching season runs roughly July to October, with tours departing Urangan Marina. Four minutes' walk to Urangan Marina for whale watching and Fraser Island vessels, walking distance to the Boat Club, cinemas, cafés, Marine Neptunes Aquarium and waterfront dining, with the beach and coastal walks close by.
