Casa d' Mar is absolute beachfront at Kirra — the sand is at the foot of the building, and the water is the first thing you see when the blinds go up. It is a fully furnished 131 square metre apartment on the end of the building rather than mid-floor, which is why the outlook runs a full 270 degrees: the high rises of Surfers Paradise to the north, the whole sweep of Kirra Beach in front of you, and Kirra Point breaking away to the south.
The 34 square metre balcony faces north and does most of the work. There is a table and six chairs out there, so breakfast, long lunches and sunset drinks all tend to happen with the surf in the background. Inside, the living and dining space is open to the kitchen and to that same view, with air conditioning, ceiling fans and a breakfast bar for the in-between hours.
Kirra is the southern Gold Coast's most relaxed beachside pocket, and Haig Street Cafe is directly below the building — a two minute trip down in the lift for a coffee before the beach. Everything else is a stroll: Cafe All Sorts, Cafe Kirra and Scooters at Kirra for breakfast; Siblings Kirra on the beachfront for sunset drinks and share plates; Kirra Beach House for Mediterranean with panoramic views; Hanks for coastal-European seafood and handmade pasta; and Billy Chow on Musgrave Street for bao, dumplings and modern Pan-Asian. There is Mexican, Japanese, Greek, Thai, burgers and fish and chips within a few blocks, the Kirra and Coolangatta surf clubs and hotels just up the street, and the Coolangatta shops, markets and pubs a short walk north.
The main bedroom has a king bed, a walk-in wardrobe and its own ensuite. The second has a king that splits into two king singles — useful for teenagers or friends travelling together — with a generous built-in wardrobe and the second bathroom, which has a large shower and vanity, just outside. The third has a queen bed, a desk and chair for anyone who has to log on for an hour, and a 55-inch smart TV on the wall. There are three TVs in total, with free Wi-Fi and Foxtel throughout, and free parking in a designated car space downstairs.
It suits families and two couples equally well: six people, three separate bedrooms, two bathrooms and enough space that nobody is on top of anybody. It is also the one guests book for a milestone — a wedding weekend, a group trip, a birthday — because the balcony holds everybody and the beach does the rest. Whales and dolphins pass close enough to watch from the balcony in season.
The building is boutique rather than a tower, so it stays quiet. Gold Coast Airport is about 1.6km away — close enough to walk in twenty minutes, and genuinely useful if you are flying in late or connecting onward. Kirra is a famous stretch of surf, and Coolangatta's cafés, restaurants, surf clubs and the Kirra Point walk are all on foot. Cooly Rocks On brings the whole strip to life each year, and this balcony is one of the better seats in town for it.

Location
On Musgrave Street, Kirra, with Haig Street Cafe directly below the building. The oceanfront walking and cycling path runs from the door south into Coolangatta and on past Greenmount, Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks. Kirra's cafés, restaurants, bars, surf clubs and hotels are an easy stroll, with Coolangatta's shops and markets close by and Gold Coast Airport only a few minutes away. Something is usually on: the Cooly Classic ocean swim in May, Cooly Rocks On in June, the Gold Coast Marathon in July, the Pacific Airshow in August and the Coolangatta Gold in October, plus surfing and surf lifesaving events through spring and summer.
